Reading a book in public used to just be reading a book, but somewhere between BookTok and online red flag lists, it became a whole personality audit where your favourite author can get you cancelled before you even say hello. In a culture where everything feels curated, doing something genuinely slow and solitary now reads as a statement, and not always a good one. Are we actually engaging with literature anymore, or just using it as social capital?
